The archivists name him king and record no challenger. The Tiger keeps the deep reaches and the Gorilla keeps the canopy, and both of them keep clear of the Grizzly's ground. The TreeBeard is older. The Grizzly is larger. That was the whole of the forest's politics for most of the Wardens' Age. When the Long Rot took the orders, it did not take him. He was never in an order. He was in the forest.

Every layer line is a growth ring. The bark reads as bark because the machine laid it down the way the tree did, one band per season.
