The Gravewing Herald

In the old jungle reckoning the macaws were wardens of the upper dark. They carried messages between the living temples and the ones already lost to root and rot, their calls the last sound before silence took a place for good. The Skullwood archivists file them beside the Gravecallers of the Ridge and Maru of the Bonetide as the three herald orders, and note that no record says the three ever spoke. To unearth one is to find a herald still waiting on its perch, color undimmed, eye still bright with whatever it was set there to watch for. The jungle itself is on no map the Architect has recovered. This is the only thing that has come out of it.

The plumage is built in bands, every stratum laid down by the machine, the layer lines themselves becoming feather and grain.
