Hockey mask meets the shrine register. Every marigold and skull motif is cut over the familiar gouge marks in deep relief, the floral patterns and the candy-bright colors laid in stacked bands.

The shrine-carvers did not ask where a face came from before they started counting on it. This one came from outside, and the wardens carved it over the way they carved over every mask on the wall, one bloom per name.
