Shamus the Wakewatcher

Shamus came across the fields in the Wardens' Age with his own name already on him. He never answered to another. The harvest wardens called him Wakewatcher because he came to every wake. He sat on the chest of the dead through the last night before the rows took them. The wardens held that a name did not go into the ledger until he had looked at the face. For each wake he kept they cut a bloom into his fur. The one on the brow was the first. The hounds keep the graves once the dead are down. GraveSnout and Gatefang never got to a body before Shamus did.
