Patreon ExclusiveUnearthed from the collapsed rookery-shrine beneath the Ninth Cairn, still ringed in the runes that bound it there. The bird sits coiled in its own wings — a spiral of feathers folded inward like a sealed mouth, each vane ridged and vortex-carved, catching light in oil-slick bands of blue and black. The beak juts forward, honed and lacquered, the single visible eye a pale wound in the dark. Feathers overlap in calcified strata, layered the way sediment layers, the way years layer. Gravecallers were the last voices of the corvid orders, hung above doorways to tell the household who among them would not see the next winter. The runes on the crown of the ring are not decoration; they are the terms of the bargain. Those who took the relic down without speaking the terms found the bird had already spoken for them. Every striation in the plumage is deposition — the machine writing the bird into being one line at a time, each layer a stroke of the carving. Nothing here is smoothed away. The tool marks are the artifact.
