Recovered from the threshold of the Deep Vaults, where something has to stand between the reliquaries and whoever comes down.

Jaw unhinged and gaze unwavering, the FellMaw Sentinel is the most unsettling guardian in the record. Its distended maw and hollow eyes suggest something that devours what it was meant to protect, all of it carved in deep relief. The stretched skin across the cheeks is banded like something that has been pulled tight for a very long time.

The Sentinels held posts. This one held a door. The wardens put what was too small to bury and too dangerous to leave loose in the vaults below, locked the reliquaries with web-spun frames, and set the FellMaw at the top of the stair. Whether it stops things going down or things coming up is a question the archivists have left open. Whoever keeps the Deep Vaults now has not been recorded, and the FellMaw has not moved. The VoidFang is the only other Sentinel in the record that turns on what it guards. They are shelved together.

The stretched skin textures and shadowed cavities are laid down without paint. Devotion taken to its most terrible conclusion, layer by ravenous layer. It guards the threshold. Do not ask what it costs.
